Ignition Systems

The ignition system provides the energy for reliable initiation of a propellant as well as sufficient safety to avoid an unintended ignition.

The ignition system usually consists of the components

- Initiator
Electro-Explosive Device (EED) to transform an electrical signal into a pyrotechnical impulse

- Ignition Chain
Pyrotechnic charges to transmit and amplify the pyrotechnical impulse of the EED

- Ignition main charge
Produces sufficient pressurised gas with hot particles to initiate ignition of the propellant

- Safety and Arming Unit (S.A.U.)
Consists of separate triggered electrical or mechanical interlocks within the ignition chain

- Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)
Includes grounding and shielding as well as protection against electrostatic discharge (ESD) and high-frequency (HF) energy
